John Yellow Flower was a well-known audacious chief of the great Ute tribe, inhabiting the central and west portions of Colorado and
the east portion of Utah, also extending into New Mexico. They were a warlike people, roving hunters and relentless warriors, making
war upon whites and other Indian tribes alike. They practiced no agriculture. Little is known of their social and political
organization. By Executive Order in 1861, Uintah Valley was set apart for the Ute tribe, and the remainder of their lands was
taken by the United States without purchase. It was a shrewd bargain of apparent peace and amity on the part of the government in
order to avoid warfare with this fierce nation.
