Man And Chief was a leader of the Pawnee tribe, a name probably derived from 'pariki,' meaning a horn, a term used to designate a
peculiar manner of dressing the scalp-lock. This marked feature of the Pawnee gave currency to the name. Pawnee tribes established
themselves int he valley of the Platte River, Nebraska, acquired by right of conquest. This territory was remote from the disputed
region of the Spaniards and French. The Pawnee tribe never warred against the United States. They gradually abandoned their homes
and customs before the ever-increasing pressure of white immigration. Many joined the United States Army as scouts. They have
constantly dwindled in numbers.
