Young Black Dog, the youngest of the six principal chiefs of the Osage tribe, was descended from a long line of distinguished chiefs,
one of whom was prominent in the establishment of peace between the government and some of the Indian tribes. In 1876 he visited
Washington to adjust various business matters. The Osages, who met with Marqueete on the banks of the Missouri River, were allies
of the Illinois, and near the end of the last century, being driven down to the Arkansas River, and coming in contact with the French,
became their staunch allies. During the Civil War one thousand of this tribe joined the Confederacy as soldiers. Later being
removed to Indian Territory, they were placed under the protection of the Society of Friends, or Quakers.
