Big Elk was a prominent chief of the Ponca tribe, distinguishing himself in battle against the Sioux in dispute over territory. Up to
1871 the two tribes were on amicable terms, but in that year hostilities broke out. The Sioux made raids on the Ponca, forcing the
removal of the tribe to Indian Territory in 1877. Through this warfare more than a quarter of the Ponca lost their lives. A
commission appointed by President Hayes in 1880 inquired into the matter of the displacement of the Ponca from lands owned by them
in fee simple, and effected a satisfactory arrangement of the affairs of the tribe. Their lands were allotted to them in severalty.
