Young Whirlwind was a haughty and valorous chief of the famous Southern Cheyenne, for generations a typical prairie tribe, living in
skin tepees, following the buffalo over vast areas of the west, traveling and fighting on horseback. In character they were proud,
contentious, and brave to desperation. In 1864 they suffered a severe blow by the Chivington massacre in Colorado. In 1867 the
Southern Cheyenne were assigned by treaty to a reservation in west Oklahoma, but refused to remain upon it until after their
surrender in 1875. In 1901-02 the lands of the Southern Cheyenne were allotted in severalty and the Indians are now American citizens.
