Hairy Bear

Hairy Bear was a chief of the Winnebagoes, meaning 'Big Voiced People,' a numerous and powerful branch of the great Dakota family, living in Wisconsin. They lived chiefly on the great plains, and in houses and dress were similar to the Sauk and Fox. Among the Winnebagoes the different clans, and also the individuals, were named after animals. The outstanding qualities of the animals were believed to be communicated to those bearing their names. Thus, the name 'Bear' always denoted a brave, warlike nature. In 1802 the Winnebagoes ceded the greater part of their lands to the government, and were finally placed on a reservation in Nebraska.
