War Captain was a chief of the Nambe tribe, a division of the Pueblos, living north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Nambe River, a small
tributary of Rio Grande. 'Pueblo,' a term applied by the Spaniards, meant town or village, and these people were so called because
they lived in a peculiar style of compact, permanent settlements. They were an agricultural people, hunting only to a limited
extent. Active missionary work was commenced among them early in the 17th century. Difficulties arose between the civil authorities
and the missionaries, in which the Indians became involved. In 1680, they rose in revolt, killing the missionaries and many whites
and destroying the missions.
