Iron Bull was a chief renowned in the Crow tribe for his dignity and sagacity. The Crows, a wandering tribe of hunters, inhabited the
country in and around the Rocky Mountains, along the sources of the Powder, Wind, and Bighorn Rivers. Their Tepees, or wigwams, were
set up without any regular order, and on the poles, instead of scalps, they attached small pieces of colored cloth, chiefly red,
floating like streamers in the wind. The proudest of Indians, they despised the whites, and, not condescending to kill them, or make
war upon them, it was their constant delight to plunder them.
