Arkikita, a full-blooded Oto Indian, was a leading warrior of his tribe, and during the early settlemetn of Nebraska, when white
emigrants had been attacked on Big Sandy Creek and robbed of all they possessed by a party of Pawnees, Arkikita, leading a band of
Otoes, fell on them, and killed the entire party. He received commendatory letters from the government for this service to the
whites - small payment, one may think. Arkikita, as well as being a fierce fighter, was also a man of scheming and cunning. He
succeeded in gaining the position of Head Chief of the tribe by concluding a treaty with the government by which the Oto ceded the
southeastern part of Nebraska.
