Cayatanita, one of the great War Chiefs of the Navajos, was in command of the Indians during the siege of Fort Defiance. The Navajos
were a very numerous band belonging to the Apache nation, inhabiting the mountains and plateaus of Arizona and New Mexico. They
acquired many useful arts from the Pueblos, chiefly spinning and weaving. They cultivated the soil extensively, raising corn,
squash, melons, etc. Their principal wealth, however, was in horses, sheep, and goats. They built rude houses for dwelling places.
Descent was in the female line, a man belonging to the clan of his mother, and women held a high position in this tribe.
