Red Shirt was of the Dakota tribe, and among the head men who met with the United States government commissioners to discuss an
agreement concerning the ceding of Black Hills and the Powder River country, valuable land containing gold. Congress had decided
that no aid would be furnished the Indians until they relinquished all claims to these lands and to the hunting grounds along the
Yellowstone River. While it has been the white man's 'manifest destiny' to rule and subdue by right of superior intelligence as well
as by might, it is with compunction and regret that one sees the virtual extinction of so noble and interesting a race as the Indian.
