Big Snake was a chief of the Winnebagoes,a tribe divided into two great divisions - one known as 'Those Who Are Above,' and the other
'Those Who Are On The Earth.' The clans all bore animal names, the characteristics of the animal supposedly being communicated to the
clan so named. The Winnebagoes formed the van of the eastward migration of the Dakotas. In 1832 they ceded all their lands south of
the Wisconsin and Fox rivers for a reservation above the Upper Iowa. They rapidly disintegrated, becoming unsettled, wasteful, and
scattered. In 1856 they moved to Blue Earth, Minnesota, and at last, greatly reduced in numbers, reached the Omaha reservation.
