Blackeye was a famous chief of the powerful tribe of Blackfeet Sioux. They were a restless, warlike and predatory people, constantly
at war with all other tribes surrounding them, except the Atsina and Sarsi, whom they had taken under their protection. While never
actually at war with the United States, their general attitude was one of hostility. Within the recent historic period, until
gathered upon reservations, the Blackfeet held most of the immense territory stretching frm North Saskatchewan River, Canada, to the
headwaters of the Missouri in Montana. They were roving hunters, practicing no agriculture, with no pottery art and no canoes.
In 1909 they were officially numbered at 4,635.
