Grey Eagle was of Apache Atabascan stock, a fierce, nomadic tribe, roaming over the territory of Mexico and Arizona, a scourge and
terror to settlers. This tribe never constructed houses, living only in wigwams, or tents of skins and blankets. They did not
cultivate the soil, manufactured nothing, and seldom went to the chase, as their country was practically destitute of game. They
seemed to depend entirely upon pillage for their support. These characteristics and conditions made them one of the most feared of
Indian tribes.
