| George's climb to the top of the musical ladder was done the hard way. Born in the London slums, he received only nominal musical training and was forced to leave school at 16 to help support his family. After working in cabarets, George landed a recording contract and in '47 came to the U.S. His record, "September in the Rain," gained him popularity. George wrote "The Lullaby of Birdland." |
