| Al got his start in a Memphis amateur contest, when he won first prize ten weeks in a row. After coming to New York and playing some club dates, Al auditioned for a job with Duke Ellington and was signed on the spot. He was the Duke's featured vocalist for 8 1/2 years and won the Esquire Award for the Nation's Top Male Vocalist three times. As a single performer, Al made a smash hit with "Unchained Melody." |
