Union Army Gains Control Of Town
'General Grant stormed into Jackson this afternoon and sent the Southern Army scurrying for safety. The loss of the town hurt the
Confederates because Jackson was the last link that Vicksburg had with the South. General Joe Johnson, having just recovered from
gunshot wounds, could offer hardly any resistance to the Union power. Once in charge of the town, Grant followed Genera Sherman's
orders and destroyed the entire town. The inhabitants fled for their lives, leaving their homes and precious possessions at the
mercy of the enemy soldiers. The last hope of the Confederacy was to cut off the North's supply lines and force them to leave
Jackson. But Grant's men had no supply lines and were living off the town they had captured.'
