Union Troops Cut To Ribbons By Rebs
'Federal troops were at the mercy of Confederate bullets as death and the Confederacy shared the victory today. In one of the most costly battles of the war, 9,000 Union fighters lost their lives on the open plains. The battlefield was strewn with youn gallant fighters who had been killed in the battle. The defeat has been blamed on blundering military strategy on the part of the Union generals. General Lee was thankful to hear that Confederate casualties were kept down to only 1,500. He expressed great faith in the soldiers of the Confederacy and hoped that today's victory would help bring about the end of the war. Stonewall Jackson felt that the spirit of the Union fighters would be broken every time they recalled Fredericksburg.'
