Rebel Stronghold Falls to Union
'The Union's naval forces have successfully gained control of a Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, it was disclosed
today. One of the islands, which the South has been using to great advantage, was seized by General John Pope, when Union ironclads
fired relentlessly on it. A small Confederate fleet tried to repel the attack, but offered little resistance to the powerful flotilla.
Thousands of spectators who watched the battle from the shore saw several Confederate ships sunk and other Southern boats burned or
captured. With Union boats steaming up and down the Mississippi, Memphis surrendered to the North. News of the victory sent
Washington into a joyous stupor.'
